The heartwood is yellow-brown to red-brown, with yellow-brown varieties often showing colored streaks; it feels slightly oily and has a slight vanilla scent when fresh.

Natural durability: Relative resistance to fungi.

Heartwood: Durability class 1. Relative resistance to animal organisms: Heartwood: Dry wood borers D, termites D, and marine borers S.

Use class:
 4 = Permanent contact with soil or fresh water.

Strength class:  D60, depending on origin and quality.

Bulk density: 1,080 kg/m³ at 12% moisture content.​
